Summers withdraws his name for city seat

HIGH SPRINGS – Bobby Summers has withdrawn his name from consideration for the vacant High Springs City Commission seat.

“I just feel like I gave it my best shot and it was time to withdraw my name,” Summers said.

With Summers out, that leaves three finalists: Jessica Hall, Scott Jamison and Bob Barnas.

ALACHUA – A 9-year-old girl who may have been abducted in Alachua but who has since returned home has police looking for a man they want to question.

The girl was playing in her back yard on 154th Place in Alachua near Food Lion when she was approached around 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 16 by a black man, approximately six feet tall, average build, no facial hair, and a short haircut. He was wearing a black jacket, black pants and a black hat.

This year’s event is March 11-14. Each year, approximately 150,000 racers, their staff and visitors are drawn to the 4-day race event. Sheriff’s deputies urge visitors to “Play it Safe” by following the listed safety tips. Remove all valuables from the interior of your vehicle and lock them in the trunk. Always lock your vehicle and activate the alarm if you have one installed. Do not carry large sums of cash on your person. Be cautious at ATMs. Make sure that there is no one peering over your shoulder while you enter your PIN number, or while withdrawing cash. On the trip to the race track, leave early and expect delays. Pay close attention to law enforcement officials directing traffic at intersections close to the track. Be prepared to stop or be re-routed. Driving under the Influence (DUI) violations will be strictly enforced. Display ALL EVENT parking credentials from the rear view mirror or permanently attach to the driver’s side of the windshield prior to arriving at the track. Ticket sales, other than at designated booths, are prohibited on Gainesville Raceway property. All forms of gambling are a violation of track rules. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent injury.
